Personal Responsibility: Going from Fat-to-Fit = From Leftist-to-Conservative.
I was checking out a few articles about getting back in shape, and I ran across this particular story that was really interesting to me. Linda Andrew is a Ghanian born American who decided to take control of her own life and health. It reminded me of the simple reality that going from Fat-to-Fit takes the same change in mindset that is required to go from being Leftist-to-Conservative. At the end of the day, it’s about personal responsibility.
Back in 2007, at the age of 32, this wife, and mother of three, tipped the scales at over 200-lbs. Today, at the age of 40, on top of being a registered nurse, Linda Andrew is also a personal trainer and champion fitness competitor who weighs in at a sculpted 140-lbs.
“I still can’t believe it! Working out and proper nutrition have not only transformed my body but transformed me as a person.”
“I have gone from 200lbs, with very low self esteem, to winning my pro card and taking half-naked pictures for a living! My physique is now my best shop-window for my business.”
Her statements made me think about something I read from “THAT DUDE”, Thomas Sowell in his book, “The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy”.
He was talking about the empire of poverty that Leftist/Regressive/Socialist minded people have created when he said, “To believe in personal responsibility would be to destroy the whole special role of the anointed, whose vision casts them in the role of rescuers of people treated unfairly by “society”. This reminded me of two of my favorite quotes from “THAT DUDE”, Booker T. Washington, that I reference, seemingly on a daily basis. He said, “Among a large class, there seemed to be a dependence upon the government for every conceivable thing. The members of this class had little ambition to create a position for themselves, but wanted the federal officials to create one for them.” But he didn’t just “blame the victims” as some would likely accuse him of…he had something to say about the race baiters and poverty pimps of his day also. He said, “There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”
At the end of the day, Leftist minded people need you to be a victim. They need you to give up your God-given power to take personal responsibility for your own life…and give power and control over to them. If Linda Andrew listened to the “Social Justice Warriors” out there, not only would she still be 200-lbs, but she likely would have gained even more weight…and no one would know her name. She probably would have been one of those people who blamed everything and everyone for where she was in her life…except for herself. Heck, she might have been one of those folks who blamed McDonald’s for making her fat.
Have you ever noticed that being overweight and being lazy seem to go hand-in-hand? And have you ever noticed that (at least here in America) continuously living in poverty, and being lazy seem to go hand-in-hand? When you check out what the Bible has to say about being lazy (Indolence), Proverbs 6:6-11 (NKJV) tells us about the “Folly of Indolence” when it says,
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
7 Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
8 Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest.
9 How long will you slumber, O sluggard?
When will you rise from your sleep?
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep—
11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,
And your need like an armed man.
There is something to be said for taking personal responsibility and how much better your life becomes when you commit yourself to becoming a better you. We Conservatives believe that, because of the power of “Free Will” our Creator gave us, particularly in a country as great as the United States of America (remember that Perfection Is Not A Requirement For Greatness), a person is free to win or lose, based on their view of taking personal responsibility for their own life. That’s why we believe so strongly in the Unalienable Rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” espoused in our nations Declaration of Independence. It’s not the role and responsibility of Government to make you happy…it’s their role to protect your right to pursue that happiness, just as long as you are not infringing upon the rights of others as you do so.
If you really STOP, and THINK about it, you can’t go from being Fat-to-Fit, without studying, embracing, and putting into the practice the exact same philosophies that have caused people like myself to go from Leftist-to-Conservative. As I have said in a previous article, “I USED TO BE THAT!” so I know what I’m talking about. I used to be fat, and now I’m not so fat, because I decided to take personal responsibility for my health and weight, and everything eventually got better. I used to be much more “liberal”, and I blamed others for my lot in life, and then I decided to take personal responsibility, and everything eventually got better.
Understand that there are those folks out there, almost always Leftist minded people, who see themselves as being “anointed” to protect you, from taking personal responsibility over your life. But ask yourself, how’s that worked out for you so far? Maybe, just maybe you should consider ignoring the supposedly well-intentioned “Social Justice Warriors”, who have been promising for decades now to make your life into a paradise, and look to your own hands and feet to make your own life better. Maybe, you should lace up those running shoes (or work boots), and get moving. Things won’t necessarily change for the better overnight…but I’m willing to bet that you didn’t get out of shape overnight either. I’ll tell you what…why don’t you start by “taking a lap”, then come back and talk to me, and we’ll go from there.
