Santorum joins the race, but can he win? Take our poll!

Victor Medina

It’s official: former Senator Rick Santorum (PA) has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President. His 2012 run was impressive, racking up 11 wins in primaries and caucuses, including his stunning win in Iowa. He earned nearly four million votes and finished second to Mitt Romney in a crowded GOP race.

Santorum is perhaps the most socially conservative candidate in the field. A committed Catholic, he is a staunch pro-lifer and opposes gay marriage and birth control. He also submitted the Workplace Religious Freedom Act while in the Senate. His conservative stance made him a favorite target of the left, including attacks from commentator Alan Colmes, singer Miley Cyrus (who ranted about Santorum’s gay marriage stand), and True Blood creator Alan Ball (who was offended that Santorum said his faith guides his decisions).

His 2016 run, however, has not yet caught fire like his 2012 run. According to the Real Clear Politics average of major polls, Santorum is under 2%, a mighty fall from his former front-runner status the first time around. In 2012, conservatives seemed to solidify around Santorum for a time, but with a number of ultra-conservative candidates in the running this year, the vote is split. Voters may also be looking for a fresh face, while others feel he has been out of politics too long (he was voted out of office in 2007).
