Chris Rock and Conservatism.
I read an article yesterday where comedian, and Saturday Night Live alumni, Chris Rock, lamented how “Conservative” many colleges have become nowadays. He said that their “Conservatism” was “Not in their political views — not like they’re voting Republican — but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody.” Well, with all due respect (which is very little) to Mr. Rock…he obviously doesn’t have a clue as to what he is talking about. A “Conservative” is quite simply someone who wants to preserve/conserve the revolutionary advances in the universal human condition, brought about by the minds and efforts of the 18th Century “Classical Liberals”, known as the “Founding Fathers”. Nothing in Classical Liberalism/Conservatism has anything to do with anyone having the right to not be “offended” by someone.
Those “Classical Liberals” based their writings on the rock solid, time tested principles of Greco-Roman Philosophy, Anglo-Saxon Law, and Judeo-Christian Morality.
In the history of mankind, there has never been another ideology that has allowed the individual to PURSUE and possibly ATTAIN, the PERSONAL FREEDOM that only comes when one has the combination of POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS, and ECONOMIC FREEDOM. Only with this ideology codified into LAW, is a man supposed to not only own himself, but own the fruit of his labor. Only with this ideology can every man have a home that is HIS castle. This is because the LAW is created to restrain tyranny, primarily from government, but also from the majority, in favor of conserving the LIBERTY of the INDIVIDUAL. So when someone says they believe in “Conservatism”, that also includes conserving the right to say things that others may find offensive.
This nations Founding Fathers made all this clear in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence when they said:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,
So Mr. Rock should either stick to comedy…and maybe add in a few fart jokes like Larry The Cable Guy…or he should be quiet and not riff on Geo-Political, Socio-Economic issues, until he has actually gone and done some real studying. I suggest that Mr. Rock begin with taking some of the FREE Online Courses from Hillsdale College, especially this one entitled “The Presidency and the Constitution”. Maybe then, he will begin to understand what Conservatism is all about.
