A “Gude” Professor
I have been blessed to teach College Preparatory Math as an adjunct. I really loved it. There are other professors out there that love it, not so much
I believe there are three different reasons why people go into the field of teaching (besides being a masochist). 1) Some teachers have a true passion for the subject matter of their given field 2) Teaching is but a stepping-stone to administration (ugh). 3) Others love the power that they wield over the students, and lord it over them.
I really had a passion of College Prep Math because I had to take it myself! I’m no math genius; I’m just stubborn as h*ll. You could almost hear the collective sigh when I told my students this tidbit. I had as cruddy public school education and only had to take Introductory Algebra when I went to high school. I was at a wee bit of a disadvantage when I had to take not only College Algebra, but Statistics and Calculus as well. I believe that one with “so-so” skills can achieve as much as someone with a gift for a given subject if they will give it all they have and be disciplined.
The “take home” message that I got from my degree is that, “the biggest inhibitor of learning is anxiety”. Hence, one must be warm, approachable, encouraging and “stamp out” any fires of anxiety as this will ultimately benefit the teacher by having more teachable students.
Professor Karl Gude goes on a mini-rant about those professors out there who act like there students are an inconvenience to them. I don’t agree with everything he says on the video, but I believe that overall he has some valid points. Academia is rife with arrogance and those who “know better” than, say, those pesky historical facts.
