StairWELL to heaven?

Leslie Brown

If you live in Harlem, New York, in a high-rise apartment building, you just might get serenaded if you take the stairs…the acoustics are great!

John Maldonado is a talented singer, working as a janitor. He has just not been in the right place at the right time to be discovered yet, but he’s still trying. “Not quitting” is one of the attributes that attracted me to my husband because it is a wonderful trait to have. This is Maldonado’s dream:

“To be a singer. I want the people whose songs I sing to start singing my songs,” Maldonado says. He adds, “I enjoy my gift and give all thanks to God and I’m going to keep singing no matter what happens.”

Somehow with this story about not quitting, Abraham Lincoln came to mind. Maybe that’s random, but let’s look at some of the failures Lincoln encountered before he was elected President of the United States:

-failed business with a partner that lead to a large debt (which he paid off)
-failed run for Illinois State General Assembly
-failed run for Illinois State Speaker
-failed U.S. Congress nomination
-rejected for the position of Land Officer
-failed run for Senate
-failed nomination for Vice President

You know, on further thought, I don’t think “Honest Abe” would have been too happy in Illinois politics if you know what I mean….Don’t quit John!
