From Afghanistan with Love

Leslie Brown

A father made his son’s sixth birthday unforgettable this Father’s Day week, and received a gift of his own, a new son he had never seen or held.

Gary Kirby is with the Minnesota National Guard 849th Augmentation Company, and has been clearing explosives in Afghanistan for nearly a year. Son Derek was celebrating his sixth birthday with his friends and chose to open the large mysterious box wrapped in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle gift-wrap first.

Inside was his daddy. The first think Derek did, was touch the top of his dad’s head to feel the “burr” haircut that he shares just like his dad.

A four month old son named “Arley” awaited the father’s arms after surprising Derek. The birthday party appears to have taken place in a party room of a “Chuck E. Cheese” type venue, which even after Afghanistan is still probably a pretty scary assignment in my opinion!
