No “Walker” for this Granny!
Running a marathon is not easy; the training alone requires more discipline than most people choose to exercise these days. Thanks to my parents, I have completed three, but now consider myself “retired”. Harriette Thompson puts me to shame, because at 91, she just completed her fifteenth!
Harriette is a delight! She ran her first marathon at the age of 76, and referred to the event as the “spirit of 76″. As a two-time cancer survivor, she ran that first race to raise funds for leukemia and lymphoma research. Can you imagine what her friends were thinking when she called them up to solicit donations?
Discipline is sorely lacking in today’s society; thankfully I was blessed to have a dad who is a former triathlete/marathon runner, and a mother who is a nurse…”Nurse Diesel”, but that’s another story!
Harriette is a delight, and hopefully an inspiration to others to get their ever-widening American backsides off of the couch, and enjoying the gifts of their health and the outdoors.
