Walking the Stage

Leslie Brown

Graduation, or “walking” is an exciting time; even more so for Zachary Pickett of California because 22 months ago, he literally couldn’t walk.

The water-polo player broke his neck on a sand-bar while on life-guard duty, and it was doubtful that he would ever walk again. Zachary has been confined to a wheel-chair for most of his recovery, and has undergone rigorous physical therapy. That didn’t keep from staying on top of his studies to graduate with the rest of his class though.

Instead of focusing on himself at graduation, Zachary used the event to recognize the support given to him by his family, coaches, friends and team-mates throughout the ordeal.

Zachary is planning on starting at University of Southern California in the fall and plans to major in business. Dogged determination carried this young man across the stage and to a standing ovation; there is no telling how much further it will take him.
