Wheelchair Ninja

Leslie Brown

Therese Riedel’s life came to an abrupt halt on September 20, 2008 when the promising basketball player dove into a wave that concealed a sand bar. She knew immediately that something was wrong; she had broken her C5 vertebrae.

Each day, Therese begins with prayer, asking that she exude patience and kindness. Able to drive now, Therese regularly drives herself to an adaptive martial arts class taught by Greg Fraser. Through Greg’s training, Therese has gained strength and mobility, and become able to defend herself in the event of an assault.

Therese’s love of the surf and sand remain, and she hopes that the city of San Diego, California where she lives will one day have trolley service to the beach where she believes she will go on to walk again, saying “God can do anything“.
